Parents as Interventionists: The Art of Parent Coaching for Success

Parents play an important role in helping individuals with exceptionalities achieve greater independence.

Lovaas and colleagues (1973) first emphasized the importance of parents as interventionists for children with autism in the 1970s. Since that time, parents of children with exceptionalities have been shown to be effective in delivering a variety of interventions aimed at increasing communication, decreasing inappropriate behavior, and improving child–parent relationships. Involving parents as interventionists has also been shown to help individuals generalize and maintain skills over time.

This presentation will discuss one model for coaching parents to deliver interventions in the home and community setting.

This session has been approved for 1.50 hours at the LSW, LMSW & LCSW levels by the National Association of Social Workers- Idaho Chapter and may be applied toward continuing education requirements for social work license renewal.
